Step 1: Cleaning gas burners and heads

If you have a hob with a pilot flame, you must first turn off the gas valve. Gas burners have a removable ceramic cap that spreads the flames.

Under the caps is the burner head, on top of the gas tube. Remove the caps and the burner heads by gently lifting them upright. This prevents damage that you may regret later on.

Soak the burner heads and burners for 30 minutes in a bowl of soda and warm water. Then scrub the burner heads and caps with a non-abrasive scouring pad. For hard-to-reach areas, use an old toothbrush in combination with a mixture of soap and warm water.

If the port openings are clogged, use a paper clip to free them. Fold the paperclip to a straight rod and push it through the narrow passages. The dirt will come out on the other side.

Be careful not to damage the metal and let it dry upside down. You don’t want any suds in your pipes.

Do you have an electric stove? Then use the tip on the next page!

Step 2: How to clean electric burners

This is what you need to clean your electric burners:

  1. Detergent
  2. Soda baking
  3. Non-abrasive scouring sponge
  4. Microfiber cloth
  5. Cleaning cloths

If your electrical coils and drippers are full of caked-on dirt, turn on the burners for a few minutes to burn off the residue. After they have cooled down, wash the drippers with warm, soapy water and cover them completely with a mixture of 2 parts baking soda and 1 part water. Leave the drip pans to stand for 15 minutes.

While the drip pans soak, wipe the heater coils with a damp cloth to remove stains and residue. Scrub the drip trays and rinse off the bicarbonate of baking soda mixture. Use fresh, soapy water to wash and rinse and then dry. Now you can simply polish them with a microfiber cloth until they are completely shiny again.

Now, on to the last item: your hob.

How do you clean your hob?

You need to know this beforehand: with stovetops, you need to be very careful and prevent the electric starter from getting wet.

Degrease the hob by wiping it with a damp cloth to loosen the top layer of residue. Use a sponge and soap to cut through the grease and wipe your stove with a damp cloth to remove the soap residue.

For firmly caked-on dirt, you can turn to a homemade soda mix, as explained on the previous pages. Spread your cleaning paste all over your stove and leave it on for at least 15 minutes.

If you let yourself be intimidated by cleaning your gas or electric stove, then you’re not doing it right. Expensive detergents and hours of scrubbing are simply not necessary. You have everything you need and now you know how to use it!
