The lush tropical island of Bali makes a great place to tour for backpackers throughout the year. Enjoy traveling between Bali destinations on an air-conditioned shuttle bus. There are so many fun things to do, and you will meet people who are happy to show you their favorite hangouts.
Start the day with a whitewater rafting trip on the Ayung River. Choose an option that includes a lovely lunch buffet to get a taste of the local cuisine. Spending the afternoon playing at Kuta Beach can be pricey, so opt to go to Pandawa or Secret beach instead. You will love this beach hidden behind limestone walls. If you love water activities, you may want to splurge on the water rides at the water park. Many nightclubs offer cheap drinks, and you can listen to tunes spun by international DJs.
Many backpackers find it easy to play all day at the DMZ Bali 3D Art Museum. Take photos at this museum looking like you are attacked by snakes, fixing to fall off a snowboard, and more at this museum featuring more than 120 exhibits. Then, head to the white sandy beach to play. This beach is a great place for beginners to go surfing. If you need lessons, you can find many cheap locations on the beach. It is also a fantastic place to go swimming. Try to leave time to visit the Dalem Kahyangan Temple, which many experts put on their list of must-see Buddhist temples before you die.
Compared to Legian and Kuta, Seminyak is much more serene and upscale. Therefore, you need to watch how much you spend in this city. Enjoy sipping one of the local coffee drinks before heading to the spacious Nyaman Gallery. Local artists make most of the art here, and it is a terrific place to see glasswork and woodcarving from the East Nusa Tenggara. If you enjoy seeing temples, consider visiting Pura Petitenget, one of Bali’s famous sea temples. You may also want to visit Pura Masceti, dedicated to agriculture.
You could also head on over the Seminyak Beach to cool off and enjoy the sun.
Sanur has an older vibe than other Bali communities. If you visit this area, consider camping as it is much cheaper than other housing options. There are many beautiful choices in campgrounds. You will find many small farmers’ markets and street vendors here, so it is relatively easy to eat inexpensively. If you love surfing, hire a local moped rider to take you to Serangan. Sanur is a great spot to go scuba diving. The constant wind makes this a fantastic place to go kitesurfing. You can find many inexpensive tour operators here that will gladly take you to Nusa Archipelago to see the Komodo dragons in their natural habitat on the Komodo Islands and to Flores Island to see the Kelimutu Volcano. Shop at the night market to find fantastic Indonesian cuisine.
While it is easy to find all-inclusive, five-star resorts in Nusa Dua, you can also find great hostels in this southern Bali location. Geger Beach is one of the most iconic sites, and you will want to spend some time relaxing on it. Then, take the short walk to see Pura Geger. Head to the south temple wall and look for a path down to the water as it leads to a secluded beach. You may find great opportunities to go paragliding and ride banana boats inexpensively. You may be surprised by the number of street vendors that sell pork.
The forest near the temple in Jimbaran offers fantastic opportunities to see wildlife. Just be careful not to get pickpocketed by the monkeys or keep some fruit handy to bribe them to give your stuff back. If you love to surf, then walk down the stairs cut into the rock wall, and you will find perfect conditions. There are many opportunities for fishing. Do not worry if your catch gets away because the fish market is a great place to shop, and the nearby morning market is a terrific place to get local produce.
World Heritage Sites
Spend the last day by hiring a private guide to show you Bali’s World Heritage sites. Most tours start by exploring Taman Ayun Temple. This site offers unique architecture, lotus-filled gardens, and beautiful gardens. Then, head to Pura Ulun Danu Beratan, which may be floating depending on the water level. This location is an ideal spot to go for a ride in a swan boat or cast a line in the water. Enjoy a stroll and a picnic at the Jatiluwih Rice Terrace, where you will not believe the vivid green color. End your day and your backpacking trip to Bali by taking selfies at the Handara Gate.
